"Must I crack thine skull, then I shalt!"
- The Medieval Soldier

Updated and reuploaded, because honestly, that is the easiest way to get you people to notice these updates. :paranoid:

The Soldier was the first out of these medieval sets that I made, around the time when the Medieval Mode was first added to Team Fortress 2. His medieval design wound up having a very cold colour scheme compared to how the classes usually are, but what can you expect when he's wearing a suit of armour? If nothing else, I managed to redeem at least some of that cold lack of colour by throwing a team-coloured surcoat into the design (otherwise you probably wouldn't be able to tell what team he'd be on without some team-coloured items).

The headpiece is a classic knight's helmet with a team-coloured plume on it. Paint buckets applied to the helmet would probably exclusively colour the plume, while the rest retains the metallic grey.

The primary weapon is a bundle of throwable javelins with explosive charges strapped to them. They'll hit and explode on the first target, then pass on through to hit anyone standing behind the target as well. One lucky throw and you'll probably get a shish kebab.

The secondary weapon is a kite shield with a team-coloured herald on the front. It basically works like a reverse Chargin' Targe, in that you hold down the right mouse button to bring up the shield and briefly reduce your own speed while soaking up and incoming damage (or at least a percentage of it).

Now that I think about it, he might've looked better as a gladiator. I'd imagine a gladiator being a rather crazy person as well, though not breaking any codes of honor, which suits soldier perfectly, and due to haphazard armor, would fit in the helmet and make him appear to wear little armor other wise(and fittingly to him, wearing the helmet and then just clothes)so as not have him look tougher than heavy. Also, spear and shield would still work. Do you really care? probably not.

Hmmm i could see Medieval Soldier having Drinking contests and other friendly activities with a certan Black scottish cyclops Warrior. A friendship that would be frowned upon by a certan Queen.

Oh yeah, the queen really doesn't like friendships in the ranks. Not one bit!

Aawww, the armor looks badass but I can't see Soldier's face. Maybe you could make the visor small enough to cover just his eyes to make the covered face he had when he had his helmet. Explodin Spears, HELLS YEAH!! I like the pole jumping idea from Rio49 down there. Pretty acrobatic ;)
I love your idea for his shield, just like the shield upgrade from Warcraft 3. His spears could deal less damage though, so he wouldn't take any pole jumping dmg (they won't explode) but keep the shish kebab idea! That made me laugh!

Heh, yeah, true. The footmen from Warcraft III did have an active ability that functioned more or less the same as this shield would.

Maybe it should be a little overhead. Wouldn't that make it heavier?

Not necessarily. I'm not an expert in medieval stuff, but from what I know medieval shields, from early ages to high medieval ages, usually weight up to 5-6 kilos (or 10-12 pounds) at the most and 3 kilos (7 pounds) on average. I train regularly and weights like that are child's play to me, and would likely be even more so to a trained footman or knight. Especially when you can put your entire arm into keeping it up.

Did you consider all the pounds of armor you're gonna wear?

:iconfolji:
Folji Featured By Owner Mar 31, 2012  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Indirectly, yeah. The average medieval soldier, including the plate armour knights, had around 40 pounds worth of armour that they were trained to wear while they swung their swords and held up their shields, which is actually considerably less than the, what, 90 or so pounds of equipment soldiers nowadays have to wear?

I like this. I like it a lot. There's only one small problem- without the description, I NEVER could have figured out who he was supposed to be.

He might have benefited from a half-visor rather than a full one, revealing his familiar nose and jawline. Without some identifier, what we have here is a very cool picture of a knight, nothing more.

Yeah, I know. This one and the Spy are probably the ones that deviate the most from the originals. Initially this set started out with custom weapons and hats for the Soldier and Pyro before I put it aside for some time, but once I picked it up again and worked on the Heavy I decided to redesign their outfits as well as their gear. So, if nothing else, I blame it on the fact that the helmet came first. :paranoid:

Just a little medievall translate correction.

And heavy would be some huge guy bulking with armor and holding a cannon as weapon. XP

My improvised archaic English was never quite by the book...

I actually did the heavy earlier on. A bit more of an executioner type, so to say. [link]

I just think the cannon works better for heavy since then he will have a more diferent weapon instead of only miniguns.

And you were thinking to use the cannon as a sentry weren't you?

It could probably work, a cannon with splash damage cannonballs or something like. The only problem is that's more the soldier's thing than the heavy. But yeah, a cannon will be my idea of a sentry. Likely with a crossbow attachment or something. Spoiler alert.

I don't care bout spoilers, though i find that the soldier could be more in use of a shoulder mounted balista that fires the javelins. Just to keep his weapon type intact since i don't think soldier is a great trower.

Or you combine the heavy's crosbow and the cannon and make it a sentry. like level 1 would be a small cross bow turret, level 2 the double crossbow sentry, and level 3 having a cannon on top.

Instant awesome.
